While winter landscaping is not something that most people think about, it is an important part of taking care of your landscaping. Consider the benefits in reducing your costs.
While you may not have thought of winter landscaping, there are plenty of bnefits to doing it. One is to reduce fuel costs which are high enough today! The fact is, you can cut your cost by some 40 percent if you plan do take action. One way is to plan windbreaks around your property (on the west, east and north) to avoid wind blowing at the house. As these plants grow, they insulate your home enough to reduce your fuel costs!
What To Use
The best windbreaks available to you are trees and shrubs that have a low crown. To move the wind over the house instead of at it, plant an evergreen, along with a natural berm. Avoid planting on the south side of your home, though. You want the sun to be able to heat up your home whenever possible. You should also consider how tall the plants will grow. Plant them at least a foot from your home. In addition, plant them at between two and five times the grown height against the house.
Add Beauty, Too
Winter lawn care or john deere snowblowers can also add benefit to your home in looks. To make your winter landscaping look beautiful and even graceful, be sure that you take steps to make this happen. It can add interest and appeal to the landscape. Be sure that you manage your landscaping too. Taking the time to add a beautiful evergreen also means keeping the snow mounds off it.
You can also place specific plants and trees that will attract specific birds during the wintertime. Use those that produce brightly colored berries, for example. Choose a plant that has a unique color, style or shape. You may want a plant that has a unique bark texture to it to add even more interest. Consider a cranberry bush viburnum, which will have plenty of berries on them. It also has a beautiful flower in the middle of May and June. It will definitely add interest to your winter landscaping and provides something unique in the otherwise boring winter wonderland!
Alternatively, consider other bushes that work. For example, the Japanese barberry is a good choice. It will grow to four or six feet and will have amazingly colored red purple leaves during autumn. It also produces berries to bring the birds in.
Choosing the right plants for your landscaping will add character and plenty of fuel savings to your home!

Some people feel that giving flowers as gifts has been overdone and does not feel like anything special any longer. However, with a little bit of creativity they still make great gifts for the special people in your life.
For Mother’s Day, there is nothing as special as telling your mom thank you, and saying it with a bouquet of blooms and a box of goodies. You can get busy with gifts crafts and make your own gift basket with a little bit of material, ribbons and a hot glue gun, which can be used for decorating. When fresh blooms are not an option, consider baking some flower cookies; with some icing, script an “I love you” or two.
For your Christmas gift giving needs, there are many different ways you can incorporate a single flower or a whole arrangement into gifts for everyone on your list and you can always add a wine gift to the arrangement too. Poinsettia, mistletoe, winter whites, amaryllis, a Christmas cactus or holly are all well loved and appreciated symbols of holiday traditions. Deliver them yourself, or have a florist send your gift directly.
Another great way to use flowers as a gift is to cut out photos of events or people pertaining to the recipient’s life and mount them on magnetic sheets. Then put them on those sticks that florists use to attach the gift card and place them throughout the arrangement. Once the arrangement has died the recipients will still have some great pictures to put on the refrigerator or anywhere they desire.
The gift itself is not as important as the thought, so any extra touch or sentiment makes it that much more special. Don’t be afraid to experiment you may just come up with a great and unusual ways to give. Consider incorporating flowers in gift baskets for all occasions, especially a Christmas gift basket, even better if you have some nice home grown flowers to include with the gift. Also, shopping for gifts online may well provide you with a plethora of ideas.
Quite possibly the absolutely best reason for sending flowers is for no reason at all. Of course, Mother’s Day, Valentines Day and birthdays are all the “usual” times to send a floral arrangement and that is great. But, if you really want to surprise someone, then send one for no reason at all with a little surprise note attached. I guarantee it will be greatly appreciated.

It should be ok,but just to be on the safe side you can always cover them with a mulch or even put some wallpaper lining paper over them first, then cover with mulch, this stops them from rotting if you get a wet winter

Some statues, ornaments or gates to catch and hold the glistening snow? Maybe red berries or an ornamental tree that rises up out of the sleeping earth. I love gardening and in the winter gardens sleep so I make sure mine still brings me joy when I look out the window, especially when it snows.
Nope. I’m not really into statues, etc. A great way to add colour to a winter garden is planing a dogwood bush with red bark. Very nice against the white snow.

I know turnip greens & other greens..what about beets radishes ?what else??
THANK YOU TO ALL THAT ANSWER!!!
I live in alabama
If your ground is tilled deeply and without stones, you can plant beet, turnips, parsnips, carrots and leafy green veggies such as spinach and kales.
Fall planting for germination and then covering the plants with a heavy mulch to prevent “heaving” of the soil and promote easy digging works great! A cold frame placed over you greens will prevent winter “burn” and keep you harvesting well into bitter cold weather.

An indoor home garden is a delight. When it comes to interior decorating, people are just as concerned with their choices of plants as with their choices of furniture and other soft furnishings.
Some take the easy option and opt for realistic artificial plants, but most wish to go for the real thing. As winter draws in, and Christmas approaches, many people focus their attention on their indoor plants, or lack thereof.
Apart from their decorative function, nearly everyone knows that there are also health benefits from having live plants indoors. Provided that several important factors are attended to, indoor plants will clean the air during the daytime of carbon dioxide, giving off oxygen in return.
Lighting
This is perhaps the most important factor. Most indoor plants must have a good source of light. Most of the time this is provided through natural lighting and good plant positioning in the room of your choice, or through the use of electric lighting. Luckily darker leaved plants usually don’t need as much light as others.
This is where armed with a little knowledge, you can avoid choosing plants which are a going to be a challenge to provide adequate lighting for, and give yourself a much better chance of a successful outcome in creating your indoor home garden.
For an indoor garden, there are five varieties of plants which require medium to low light, and which will suit our purposes admirably. I’ve listed these below.
a. Philodendrons
b. Boston ferns
c. African violets
d. Cyclamens
e. Creeping Fig
Watering
The next biggest mistake in caring for indoor plants is over watering. This leads to rotting roots. Pay careful attention to the label that comes with your plant because each plant type has differing watering needs. Of course the biggest mistake following this is under watering and neglecting your plants to the extent that dust builds up on leaves. We’ve all done it at some point, haven’t we?
Potting
Choose good quality and attractive container for your indoor plants. Make sure that the pot is clean before placing your new plant into it to prevent infection and to encourage healthy growth.
Humidity
The fourth biggest mistake in indoor gardening is having the correct humidity for the plants. The amount of moisture in the air surrounding the plant has an effect on its growth. During mornings, you should spray the plants with water for their much-needed moisture with a fine mist atomiser. A small open container ornament with a small amount of water inside placed discreetly nearby is helpful.
Fertilization or feeding.
Feeding isn’t such a big issue as a good slow release indoor fertiliser can be bought from most home department stores, however just like watering, each plant type requires different amounts of feeding. If you’ve got most of the other factors right, fertilising isn’t going to require that much of your attention, unless you’re growing orchids for your indoor home garden which will require special fertiliser and a bit more of your loving attention.
